National Mesothelioma Awareness Day 2011: No cure for mesothelioma, but hope grows

This year marks the first official observance of National Mesothelioma Awareness Day, a holiday enacted by Congress last year to shine the spotlight on a disease that has flown under the radar for decades.

National Mesothelioma Day is Monday, Sept. 26. Activists, advocates, and victims of mesothelioma will rally to help raise awareness about one of the deadliest cancers in the world.

There is no cure for mesothelioma. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been poured into research, but supporters of Mesothelioma Day aim to finally raise the support necessary to find a cure.

Finding a cure has proven elusive though. Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that affects the lining around the organs of the chest and abdomen. The cancerous cells can spread from these lining tissues to the blood stream and lymphatic system, aggressively affecting other organs.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. Many of these cases involve people who worked as electricians, machinists, and construction workers – professions where, mid-century, asbestos-containing products were widely used.

Workers were daily exposed to the tiny, light asbestos fibers, and unwittingly carried the fibers home where their families then became exposed to them.

Asbestos exposure works like a time bomb. Workers can be exposed for years without experiencing any symptoms. Then, long after exposure, a visit to the doctor for flu-like symptoms reveals the horrific truth: mesothelioma.

Once diagnosed with mesothelioma, these patients are generally overcome by the disease within a year.

While Mesothelioma Day 2011 is a source of hope for people facing down the shadow of mesothelioma, there remains no cure. The victims of mesothelioma still cannot be made whole by medicine.

Justice against asbestos companies cannot hope to fill this void either, but filing a mesothelioma lawsuit is a very real option. Thousands have been compensated by the companies that put asbestos into American workplaces.

People affected by mesothelioma deserve to be made whole, and Weitz & Luxenberg is one of their advocates. On the eve of National Mesothelioma Awareness Day 2011, Weitz & Luxenberg is putting its resources at your disposal. Although therapy has become more tolerable and once daily FDC tables have made it easier to adhere to prescribed treatment, it still requires that patients take their medication regularly to achieve sustained viral suppression.
